Contemporary Kitchen Designs

Contemporary kitchen design tends to incorporate a lot of new material and texture, such as finely finished chrome. Bright colours, especially as splash backs and wall designs, also play a major part in any contemporary design, not least the kitchen. However, perhaps the biggest notable difference between a contemporary design and a classic design is the minimalist look. Whereas a traditional kitchen is all about packing in features, fittings, and functional aspects, a modern kitchen is more concerned with hiding away non-essential items and giving those that are visible a very clean and sleek look.

Materials

In some respects, contemporary kitchen design uses a lot of materials that have always been used in the kitchen. However, new uses and new approaches have been discovered, and many of these traditional materials have been improved in some form or another. Whether they have been made more veracious in their colour styling, or much more durable, the similarities are evident if you look hard enough. Clean, polished metal finishes are popular. Polished or effect wood is also popular. The tactile look and feel of polished materials is what makes them so popular in the hands-on atmosphere of the kitchen.

Colours

Modern colours are bright and vibrant, or metallic and showy. Traditional colours tended to concentrate on earthy and natural browns and even greens. However, in light of an increased variety in dye and pigment available, tiles are vibrantly coloured in garish blues, reds, yellows, and virtually any colour that makes a bold statement. A modern, or contemporary kitchen, isn't for the faint hearted. There's nothing to say that traditional colours can't be combined with the odd splash of modern colour. Alternatively, use neutral colours and add colour through accessories or with the odd, brightly coloured tile on the wall.

Shape And Form

Surprisingly little has really changed regarding the shape of the kitchen. The work triangle (the line between the kitchen worktop, the fridge, and the cooker) is still a viable and practical design rule that stands today. It is becoming more common to combine the kitchen with with other functional features such as a dining area. This has perhaps become more common because of the number of houses that have in the last few years created one through reception room leaving no dining room. A dining area in the kitchen is both practical and convenient.

Kitchen Appliances

White goods are no longer specifically white. Silvers, greys, and even blacks have become more common, but whatever colour kitchen appliance you want, you will undoubtedly be able to find what you are looking for. If you look carefully, you might even find a white washing machine.
