Shaker Kitchens

The Shaker design is filled with class and simple elegance. The Shakers were a mid 19th Century religious community that survived almost solely on farming and agriculture. As such, Shaker kitchens are reminiscent of old fashioned farm cottage kitchens. It was the Shaker way to create simple items, but to ensure that they were crafted to the very highest standard, in order to please their God. Shaker kitchens, then, provide a simple elegance because of their highly crafted furniture and items.

Hand crafted wood was the predominant building style, especially those woods native to their American home including maple, oak, and pine among others. Modern Shaker kitchens may be crafted from these woods or from other materials that are skilfully crafted and finished to give a very similar look and texture. The Shaker style has evolved greatly, with many Shaker doors and even kitchen units that, in reality bear very little resemblance to their original counterparts.

Kitchen Furniture

For a true Shaker kitchen design, everything must be kept simple with few or no ornamental additions to doors or kitchen units. The Shaker kitchen is a wholly functional affair, but this simplicity and the Shaker ethos of high quality craftsmanship make for exquisitely designed kitchen furniture. The wood used to create the kitchen can be painted in natural and neutral colours and still retain an authentic style that wreaks of a traditional kitchen.

A Modern Take On A Classic Theme

For many of us, the practicalities of having a true Shaker kitchen design are just too restricting. Traditional Shaker kitchens even used peg rails to hang chairs on when not in use. However, it is certainly possible to have a kitchen fitted that bears some very strong Shaker styling. Using wood as the predominant building material is certainly not uncommon, and wood lends itself perfectly to the design of a kitchen, whether that kitchen is in a contemporary or traditional space.
