Traditional Kitchens

Traditional kitchen design has never really left the public eye. The use of natural materials such as wood and stone have always proved popular in kitchen design, and probably always will. The traditional kitchen, while offering a unique style of its very own, is also a homely and practical room. It provides the cook in the house with ample workspace and more than adequate features to create a good, traditional, home made meal. That is, after all, what the kitchen was predominantly used for.

Traditional Design – Modern Living

However, just because you want a traditional look in your new kitchen doesn't mean you need to forego the practicalities of modern conveniences. The wonderful thing about deigning and planning in a certain style is that you can add items that might not seem to fit into that design. A dishwasher in a traditional style kitchen? Of course, as long as it is in keeping with the design of the rest of the room.

Traditional Kitchen Materials

Hand painted wood and natural materials and colours really are the order of the day in traditional kitchens. Kitchen units and kitchen worktops created in these materials can be as ornate or as simple as you like, because kitchen design has passed through both of these stages. It is more common to see ornate doors and handles, though, reminiscent of English kitchens between the 18th and 20th century.

Traditional Styles

Traditional is very much a general collection of styles. Under the traditional umbrella there are also various other design styles that can be used to make your kitchen look and work exactly how you want it. Georgian and Victorian are just two such styles that could be considered traditional.

  • Georgian kitchen design is very formal and makes the most of walnut or mahogany cabinets. Georgian kitchen design is also perfect for making the most of all the available space, with cabinets reaching the full height of the room in most cases.

  • Victorian kitchens were quite extravagant with arched doorways, ornate trim, and raised cabinet doors being highly predominant Victorian kitchen design features. Again, wood is the primary material, and the Victorians had a penchant for dark and heavy wood so be prepared to lighten the room with some light but natural hues.
